This volcanic rock owes its magically hyaline texture and deep gray color to rapidly cooling lava. This hard semiprecious stone has been a material of choice for weaponry and jewelry throughout the ages. Different oxides of iron have formed layers, and it is easy to imaging hot flowing lava stretching, deforming and twisting these layers as they flowed from the magma chamber onto the earth's crust.
